Introduction and materials
The International unit introduces students to one of the most successful international agreements ever made - the Antarctic Treaty.
Students will discover and learn about the international treaty that sets out how nations agree to behave in Antarctica. They will learn how Antarctica is 'owned' and ruled, exploring the role of nations other than Australia in the Antarctic, and international cooperation. The activities explore the way human beings make rules and laws about their conduct, and how these rules are enforced.
- What international agreements are in place for care and use of Antarctica?
- How have countries cooperated around Antarctic exploration?
- How much does Australia spend on Antarctic research?
